Ms. Johnson, the teacher who started Green Club, has secured a grant to fund 10 internships. The interns are students, or teams of students in some cases, who are mapping out projects to further the development of the garden. Starting in January, Green Club is joining forces with an organization called Youth Venture, which will provide funding during the semester for 5-10 youth teams that complete sustainability projects. For Youth Venture sponsorships, students must create a business plan and present the plan to a committee made up of local business people. Youth Venture sponsors workshops once a week for 10 weeks. Each team has two adult mentors with expertise in environmental conservation, food justice, or business industry.
Examples of internship proposals:
- We have almost completed the digging stage. We plan to put koi fish and rice paddies in the pond.
- This study will involve two separate beds planted with kale and fertilized differently to see which method is better.
Local Farmer's Market Stand
- We plan to sell the garden's produce at a farmer's market.
Green Club T-shirts Sales
- We will work with a teacher at our school who prints t-shirts and sell them.
Build a Greenhouse
- We will work with a volunteer who can help us with the greenhouse construction.
- We're building a drip irrigation system using tubes. Drip irrigation is a way to water many plants using a small amount of water.
